Unplugged Project "Sticky"

One of my favorite blogs to read daily is Unplug Your Kids. Each week, the author posts a different challenge to her readers in hopes of widening imaginations (and to stop relying on the TV set to entertain our children) and encouraging creativity. Two weeks ago, her challenge was "sticky" (this week it's "plastic"). Her challenge is always presented to her readers through show of what she did with her kids for that particular challenge. I decided to copy her sticky project since it fit right in line with what Andrew wanted to make for Mitch for Father's Day last weekend. You can click here to read detailed step by step instructions from Unplug Your Kids on how we did this pencil/pen holder decoupage can craft.

Below are a few pictures of Andrew actually making his gift to his dad with my simple instructions.

We started with an aluminum can and masking tape.
On day one, Andrew covered the can with small pieces of masking tape to give the can some texture and create a decoupage effect.
On day two, Andrew placed strips of clear scotch tape along the can and then painted the entire can various colors of his choice.
Here's the final result after the tempra paint dried and the scrotch tape removed. Before presenting it to Dad, we sprayed the can with an acrylic sealer to hold the paint and tape in place...just in case!

Luke also wanted to get in on the sticky action so I found another form of sticky-ness just for him. I taped a piece of contact paper on the window, sticky side exposed (this is a feat in itself!). I pre-cut cute pictures of various fun things out of the June Family Fun magazine since most pictures in it are related to kids and family (duh). Luke colored a cartoon face that resembled his Daddy and then stuck the cut out pictures all around the face. I typed and printed "I love you because you..." and stuck it to the top of the contact paper. I then typed and printed the rest of the sentence beside each picture, such as "...treat me to french fries" and "take me to the playground". I sealed the finished creation with a top piece of contact paper and we decided to give it to Mitch as a placemat, wall decoration, or whatever other idea he could come up with.

(Click on any of the images to see them larger.)

Andrew wanted to make one, too....I mean, have you tried to keep a second set of hands away from their brother's sticky contact sheet? It was best to let him make a second gift for Mitch.

Father's Day was certainly celebrated at our house!

Candy & Cotton

I went to a fall festival tonight with my friend, Jennifer, and her daughter, AC, who just happens to be Luke's best friend and future wife. Andrew and Luke enjoyed the moon walk bouncy things the most while Abigail just kicked it "cool" in her stroller, listening to the music and smelling the food. The boys made the circle by digging in the trunks of people's cars for candy (Trunk or Treat) and filling up their pumpkin buckets. This was only the first of probably three fall festivals we'll attend. I love autumn!

Recognize the shoes, Melissa
(and possibly the sweatshirt-can't remember who "donated" that to us)?

Stopping to smile in order to appease Mom.

Abigail loved her cotton candy on a stick.

Andrew, AC, and Luke got sticky fingers....or a sticky face in Luke's case.

Uncomfortable

Mitch and I went to Six Flags today. It rained most of the morning but we had a good time, regardless, and it soon cleared up. We took advantage of the cool weather and rain by standing in a shorter line to ride the GOLIATH (which was a ride that took my breath away! We rode in the front car...I'll never do that again!). Like my friend Crissy, I made several observations during my time standing in line for the many roller coasters that Mitch and I love to ride. Most of these observations made me uncomfortable. You will probably have amusement park flashbacks, sigh, and then nod your head in agreement as you read my list.

1. body odor
2. dirty water being splashed about
3. walking barefoot in the public restroom
4. sticky wet people bumping into me
5. sticky wet people standing too close to me in the line
6. couples who seem to think the line is a hotel room (can't keep their hands off each other)
7. couples attached at the mouth look up confused as to why people in line are staring at them
8. teenagers who run you over trying to beat you to the end of the line
8. old gum stuck that's been spit out and disposed of improperly
9. handrails...especially wet handrails
10. wet hairy men

I'm starting to sound like my college roommate, Heather.....am I becoming a germ freak, too?

Craft boxes

My children are ALWAYS asking to do something crafty and creative. Often, this leads to arguements over who gets to use the twisty crayons, the fat markers, the skinny Crayolas, that coloring book, those scissors, and this colored paper. So, I've decided that I'm gonna surprise them each with their own craft box. This way, they can keep all their own items stored in one place and, at the same time, have ownership over some of the art supplies and materials. Of course, my two year old daughter won't have exactly the same stuff in her box that her four and six year old brother have, nor are the craft boxes large enough to hold everything on the list...I'm gonna try to start small, I promise!

When thinking about items to include in their boxes, here's what my brain (and the Internet) spit out:

Selection of colored paper & cardboard
hole pucher

We all scream for ice-cream!

After dinner Saturday night, we dressed the boys in their PJs and took off to Bruster's as a family to enjoy the free ice-cream. Here are a few pictures of our time getting sticky!

FLOAM

FLOAM. Ever seen this stuff? It's really cool. It's not like playdough because it's very light in weight. It's not sticky either, making it easy to mold. I bought a small container of the off-brand at the Dollar Tree and it was well worth it!

Playing catch up through pics

I'm going to post a bunch of pics in hopes of getting "back in" with my family after not posting for a while. Just kidding, Mom.

Making dessert after dinner = graham crackers with marshmallows heated in the microwave to they blow up, get puffy and sticky - and make a great sandwich!

The weather today (Monday) was around 82 degrees! We spent most of the afternoon outside playing together. I can't wait for Fall to finally arrive. I think today was a nice, yet short, taste of delightful things to come!

Abigail loves to play with her wooden bear set. Luke got a hold of it when Abigail stepped away for a moment. He made this little bear and then said, "Come here, Mama! I made a preacher just like Daddy!". I guess Luke doesn't know how much Daddy HATES and DESPISES ties, hence why he usually wears a sweater vest each Sunday. There's no bears in the set with a sweater vest....we looked, I promise.

He needed manipulatives for his math homework.... my candle tea lights worked but he still used his fingers when he could.

I cut up three cereal boxes as puzzle pieces, laminated them, and then let my little ones figure it out. Luke loves puzzles and hopped right on this train.

There's a new place in town (Chill) and we visited for the first time last week one afternoon when school let out. It was yummy and the kids thought it was so cool to pick various flavors, pull the lever, mix it up in their cup, add toppings, and weigh the cup at the register. I liked the concept since it allowed for a variety of flavors and toppings.

This nest is located in a bush that sits between our church and school building. All church members and school teachers are watching it closely!

Before haircut: I spent a lot of time in my classroom preparing for our first day back at school. My kiddos often hung out with me and entertained themselves with puzzles, blocks, games, arts-n-crafts, and a plethora of other things.

Abigail entertains herself when she visits the doctor. There's always someone to talk to in the mirror!

Decorated glass jars

I love making crafts from items we already have in the house. Makes me feel efficient and creative. Of course, I steal ideas from other blogs so I guess that makes me a creative-craft-thief. Once again, here's another craft idea - this one discovered on Makes and Takes.

I've had a bag of random items sitting in a box under my bed just waiting for their final resting place....clear rocks, shells, & glittery neon flat squares (? don't have a clue where they came from). The empty jars screamed for them so we got our hot glue gun ready and went to town decorating spaghetti and pizza sauce jars.

Andrew shows off his final result.

Andrew decided the jar was the perfect place for his new set of colored pencils.

This is what Abigail was doing while we were decorating our jars.
Aren't her feet cute with all those squares stuck to it? Oh yeah, it was LOADS of fun sweeping up all those squares....especially the ones stuck to the dried sticky juice drops.

Luke got in on the crafty action after waking from his nap. He decided he wanted a jar covered in shells we collected from our trip made two years ago to Panama City Beach, FL.

He also put his set of colored pencils in his jar.

When finished, all three kiddos sat at the table and drew
(scribbled) on large pieces of cardstock paper.

Stuck Like Glue

Mitch and I get a kick out of this video. We could watch it over and over and still laugh our booties off!

Scroll below video for lyrics.

MMMM better...MMMM better...
Absolutely no one that knows me better
No one that can make me feel sooo goooood
How did we stay so long together?
When everybody, everybody said we never would
And just when I, I start to think they're right
That love has died...

[Chorus:]
There you go making my heart beat again,
Heart beat again,
Heart beat again
There you go making me feel like a kid
Won't you do it and do it one time?
There you go pulling me right back in,
Right back in,
Right back in
And I know-oo I'm never letting this go-ooo

I'm stuck on you
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby we're stuck like glue
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby we're stuck like glue

Some days I don't feel like trying
Some days you know I wanna just give up
When it doesn't matter who's right, thought about it all night
Had enough
You give me that look
"I'm sorry baby let's make up"
You do that thing that makes me laugh
And just like that...

[Chorus:]
There you go making my heart beat again,
Heart beat again,
Heart beat again
There you go making me feel like a kid
Won't you do it and do it one time
There you go pulling me right back in,
Right back in,
Right back in
And I know-oo I'm never letting this go-ooo

I'm stuck on you
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby we're stuck like glue
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby were stuck like glue

Whutooo Whutoo

You almost stay out, too stuck together from the ATL
Whutooo Whutoo
Feeling kinda sick?
Just a spoon full of sugar make it better real quick

I say
Whutooo Whutoo
Whatcha gonna do with that?
Whutooo Whutoo
Come on over here with that
Sugar sticky sweet stuff
Come on give me that stuff
Everybody wants some
Melodies that get stuck

Up in your head
Whutooo whutooo

Up in your head
Whutooo whutooo

Up in your head
Whutooo whutooo

Up in your head
Whutooo whutooo
Whuthoo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me together, say, it's all I wanna do
I said

[Chorus:]
There you go making my heart beat again,
Heart beat again,
Heart beat again
There you go making me feel like a kid
Won't you do it and do it one time
There you go pulling me right back in,
Right back in,
Right back in
And I know-oo I'm never letting this go-ooo

There you go making my heart beat again,
Heart beat again,
Heart beat again
There you go making me feel like a kid
Won't you do it and do it one time
There you go pulling me right back in,
Right back in,
Right back in
And I know-oo I'm never letting this go-ooo
I'm stuck on you

Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby we're stuck like glue
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me baby were stuck like glue
Whutooo whutooo
Stuck like glue
You and me
baby we're stuck like glue

Practice makes perfect

Andrew can write his name and often puts the letters in order. Still, we try to practice writing it everyday in some form. Yesterday, I gave him sticky letters to see if he could place them in order on his chipboard initial. He got the order right but turned some of the letters in the wrong direction. Next, he wrote his name in glue and then put stale Cheerios on top. This time, he again knew the correct letters but didn't place them in order.....and definitely not all in the right direction. He was so happy with his work and I just had to take a picture of his proud smile.

Practice, practice, practice....it will eventually bring perfection....well, kind of.
