Small group

For our small group time each Sunday evening, we rotate a "study night" and "play night". When we study, we discuss the book we're reading, God's Big Picture: Tracing the Story-line of the Bible...but, when we play, we laugh hard! A few weeks ago, we played Cranium together. We found out that alot of us can't hum a tune, some can't draw blindfolded, a few are really bad actors, some have tons of useless information stored in their brains, and others can't spell forwards or backwards. You can click on any picture to make it larger.

Joe trying to act something out. I don't think he won this round.

Alec and Rosie laughing at their attempt to spell backwards.

Allison, Kelsey, and Joe are listening
intently to the group question.

Andrew doesn't like to be left out.
Elizabeth and Ira don't seem to mind.

Yeah, watch out Amelia. Luke is getting used to MC!

Abigail and MC are becoming fast friends!
They had fun laughing with us big folk.

Name writing

Andrew knows all the letters in his name and can write them all by himself. The only thing he has to have help on is getting the letters in order. As we were making family valentines last week (yes, it's early), Andrew surprised me by writing his name correctly by himself for the very first time. He was so proud!

Pots & pans

Wouldn't you know it...just as I began preparing dinner, this is what my children decided to do. So, as I continued in my duty, I endured a noisy kitchen....but my heart swelled with love knowing that they long to be together and always at my feet.

A trip to Callaway

Since Callaway Gardens is free all of this month and next, we decided to spend the holiday frolicking around, especially since this beautiful place is only 25 minutes from our town. The kids were the most excited about the butterfly house where they were able to touch cocoons, see butterflies and moths flutter around their heads, and listen to our friend, Jennifer, read a story. We all enjoyed walking the trails and skipping rocks. Visit Callaway Gardens when you get the chance! Although it's not spring time and the flowers/trees are not in bloom, you won't be disappointed with the amount of things there are still to do.

Maria's Big House of Hope

Emily Chapman has written an encouraging post about the new orphanage in China named in honor of her sister, Maria Sue. I think it's incredible that Emily and her family have shown the love of Christ to orphans and pressed forth proclaiming the gospel after such heartbreak and tragedy.

Go read the article and be encouraged! The orphanage is HUGE!

I've lost it

I just realized (thanks to Sara Z.) that I posted yesterday's RedBox code today! Due to yesterday's holiday, I've been living today like it's Monday!

Going crazy, I am.

More from Piper

I was moved to tears this morning as I watched the presidential inauguration on television. It was certainly a historical moment that I am thankful to be witness to. Although Obama wasn't my choice of president, I congratulate him and will pray for him as he leads our country.

So, having said that, remember when I said I was a single-issue voter (and proud of it)? John Piper has written more on the issue of being a pro-life christian under a pro-choice president and I wanted to share it here with you.

Being Pro-Life Christians Under a Pro-Choice President

That is the title of a sermon I preached January 17, 1993 three days before Bill Clinton was inaugurated president. It is just as relevant—or more—today.

The text was 1 Peter 2:17, “Honor the king.” I closed with eight ways to honor a pro-choice president. The seventh was this:

We will honor you by expecting from you straightforward answers to straightforward questions. We would not expect this from a con-man, but we do expect it from an honorable man.

For example,

  1. Are you willing to explain why a baby's right not to be killed is less important than a woman's right not to be pregnant?
  2. Or are you willing to explain why most cities have laws forbidding cruelty to animals, but you oppose laws forbidding cruelty to human fetuses? Are they not at least living animals?
  3. Or are you willing to explain why government is unwilling to take away the so-called right to abortion on demand even though it harms the unborn child; yet government is increasingly willing to take away the right to smoke, precisely because it harms innocent non-smokers, killing 3,000 non-smokers a year from cancer and as many as 40,000 non-smokers a year from other diseases?
  4. And if you say that everything hangs on whether the fetus is a human child, are you willing to go before national television in the oval office and defend your support for the "Freedom of Choice Act" by holding in your hand a 21 week old fetus and explaining why this little one does not have the fundamental, moral, and constitutional right to life? Are you willing to say to parents in this church who lost a child at that age and held him in their hands, this being in your hands is not and was not a child with any rights of its own under God or under law?

Perhaps you have good answers to each of these questions. We will honor you by expecting you to defend your position forthrightly in the public eye.

You have immense power as President of the United States. To wield it against the protection of the unborn without giving a public accounting in view of moral and scientific reality would be dishonorable. We will honor you by expecting better.

Article by John Piper

On the Desiring God blog today:

How Barack Obama Will Make Christ a Minister of Condemnation

At Barack Obama’s request, tomorrow in the Lincoln Memorial, Gene Robinson, the first openly non-celibate homosexual bishop in the Episcopal Church, will deliver the invocation for the inauguration kick-off.

This is tragic not mainly because Obama is willing to hold up the legitimacy of homosexual intercourse, but because he is willing to get behind the church endorsement of sexual intercourse between men.

It is one thing to say: Two men may legally have sex. It is another to say: The Christian church acted acceptably in blessing Robinson’s sex with men.

The implications of this are serious.

It means that Barack Obama is willing, not just to tolerate, but to feature a person and a viewpoint that makes the church a minister of damnation. Again, the tragedy here is not that many people in public life hold views (like atheism) that lead to damnation, but that Obama is making the church the minister of damnation.

The apostle Paul says,

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves , nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

What is Paul saying about things like adultery, greed, stealing, and homosexual practice? As J. I. Packer puts it, “They are ways of sin that, if not repented of and forsaken, will keep people out of God’s kingdom of salvation.” (Christianity Today, January 2003, p. 48).

In other words, to bless people in these sins, instead of offering them forgiveness and deliverance from them, is to minister damnation to them, not salvation.

The gospel, with its forgiveness and deliverance from homosexual practice, offers salvation. Gene Robinson, with his blessing and approval of homosexual practice, offers damnation. And he does it in the name of Christ.

It is as though Obama sought out a church which blessed stealing and adultery, and then chose its most well-known thief and adulterer, and asked him to pray.

One more time: The issue here is not that presidents may need to tolerate things they don’t approve of. The issue is this: In linking the Christian ministry to the approval of homosexual activity, Christ is made a minister of condemnation.

C-O-L-D

I get some of my best posts from JT. I'm glad he doesn't mind me cheating and copying his stuff.

It's only 20 degrees at its coldest here where I live. Some of you live in much much much colder areas. I mean, we don't get snow in my town and some of you are battling the shovel and ice pick. Well, I'm just glad I don't have to live through what this girl demonstrates.

Luke likes to cling to a few items he deems important (at the time). He'll soon misplace these items over the course of a few days and he'll then gather new trinkets to satisfy his hoarding tendency.

Currently, you'll find these items in his pocket:

Definition, by Crissy

Definition of IRONY:

(1). incongruity in a situation
or
(2) when your father-in-law brings a deer carcass by on his way to the butcher at the same time that your only vegan friend is at your house. Hmmmm.

Crissy, you're a hoot.

Germiest places we encounter

Germiest places we encounter:
  • Purse & wallet
  • Remote control
  • Telephone
  • Carseats
  • Elevator buttons
  • Door knobs
  • Shopping cart handles
  • Keys
  • Toys
  • Computer keyboard and mouse

No matter what list you read the suggestions are the same:

  • Frequent disinfecting of the area
  • Vigilant hand washing (by you & your children)
  • Keeping your hands away from your face

With cold season upon us it is probably a good idea to take a few minutes and assess what the germist places in your house might be. Once you locate them, clean them!

Thanks, Blissfully Domestic!

Reading time

Last night, Luke wanted a book read to him but I was in the midst of changing Abigail's diaper and Mitch was cooking dinner. Andrew noticed and piped in, "I'll read you one".

So, he did.

Washing dishes

I couldn't help it. I had to take a picture of Abigail with her Gami while helping one another wash the dishes. I have many pictures of myself, at this same age, washing dishes with my own mother.

Jumping night

When younger, I remember taking the cushions off the couch so my siblings and I could run on them, jump, flip, wrestle, and fight. I always won....right, Stuart?

Last night, Andrew took his turn.

Pres WIC

Just returned home today from an overnight stay in Macon where First Presbyterian, PCA hosted our annual ladies WIC meeting. Again, I had so, so, so, so much fun. I love being around these women and meeting other ladies from the other 17 churches in our presbytery.

From left to right:
Heather is super friendly, organized, funny, and has an amazing singing voice.
Mary Ellen is genuine, caring, informative, and has a heart for the lost.
Missy is warm, sincere, hilarious, and simply fabulous!
Debbie is a lady of prayer, thanksgiving, and praise.
Sheila is the best hugger, a true lipstick queen, and life of the party (she's the cheerleader).
Susan has a contagious smile, a humble spirit, and a giving hand.

Thanks, Mom, for driving up to keep our children so we could both scoot away for the night!

Hubby's birthday

As adults, our birthdays are low-key. We are loud when celebrating the birthdays of our children but Mitch and I tend to keep our own birthdays pretty simple. It usually involves a cupcake, a song, a very small gift, and some hugs and kisses. Oh yeah, we always enjoy watching Mitch sing "Happy Birthday" to himself, hence his pointing. He's not being arrogant at all....just being silly with the kids.

Happy 38th birthday, Babe.
It gets better and better each day.
So glad I belong to you.
I love you, dude.

How to draw pets

Andrew has been drawing again.
He sees something...anything...and wants to draw it.
I checked out this book from the library and he got busy drawing his favorite animals.

I am impressed with how well my four year old did on drawing the animals! I gave him no help other than offering him verbal direction when his pencil was to the paper.

Abigail the dragon

I think all my kids have had their picture taken at some point with this dragon outfit on. Abigail is certainly cute, although she's trying to get out of the suit in this picture.

It's been 53 years

On January 8, 1956, five missionary men were murdered in the name of the gospel. As I've mentioned before, I have always been intrigued by this story and am always moved to tears when I re-read about it. New details are always learned everytime I hear it. These men were dedicated to Christ throughout their entire life...and their wives were also.

Live to the hill every situation you believe to be in the will of God. Jim Elliot

Thanks to JT and JC for sharing about this on their blogs today.

Randomness

My husband just joined Facebook.

I think my left leg is longer than my right.

My favorite food is macaroni-and-cheese.

I hate having white tiles and cabinets in my kitchen.

My husband's birthday is TODAY!

I love Wednesdays because I get to spend two hours alone with my eldest child.

It's January and the weather has been sort of like spring (until today, which felt like the wind from Chicago).

I don't enjoy drinking cranberry water - but I must.

I get a "high" when I get a deal at any store.

I've got some awesome friends. I'm glad they like me.

I always keep water by my bed at night.

My mother is coming this weekend and my kids are constantly asking when Gami is arriving.

I love talking geography. One of my favorite geographical areas to think about is Point Roberts, WA, USA.

The Dollar Tree is one of my favorite stores.

Publix is my choice for groceries but WalMart has far lower prices. It's worth the extra mile in gasoline.

I wonder what Seth is up to now?

The second Tuesday of every month is a dinner delight.

TiVo is a wonderful invention.

Speaking of inventions, these are the inventions I am most grateful for:
1. Ziploc bags
2. Safety pins
3. Wet wipes

I love football but the BCS talk is getting on my nerves.

Kim H. cracks me up.

Crissy S. makes me ponder, think, and shake my head in agreement.

Hope A. points me to the gospel.

Andrew plays basketball

In the fall, it was soccer.
In the winter, it is basketball.
He is already asking what he'll play in the spring and summer.

Poor Luke. His birthday falls late in the year so he'll be starting sports at the Y much later than Andrew did. When asked if he's gonna be a soccer or basketball player, Luke quickly replies, "Nope, I'm gonna play football". Well, ok then.

For Christmas, my sister gave Luke the Whack-A-Mole game. It's really funny to watch anyone play since you have to beat the timer and lights by whacking the moles over the head with a plastic mallet. Let's just say that as soon as I snapped this picture, a few of the mallets hit human heads (not mine!). School starts back tomorrow and I am only looking forward to it because it will mean there is a cease-fire to the constant fighting between brothers in the house.

Bad News: Santa is coming to town

I know it's been a week since Christmas but I wanted to post this wonderful message anyhow.

2009, we welcome thee

We spent New Year's Eve at home, as usual. I think the only time we've ever really done the party thing was with the Granberry family from our church back in Birmingham, AL. Of course, that was the first year of our marriage and no children were in the picture yet. Since then, we've just stayed home, enjoyed the children, watched the ball drop in NYC and then let our heads drop on our pillow.

Anywho, I always buy one of those cheap packs of fireworks for the boys to enjoy. We lit them in the street and smiled as the boys giggled and begged for more. Well, Luke got a little scared and eventually ran inside to watch from the front window.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Y'ALL!
